The transfer of copper from the brake pad to the rotor surface is caused by pressure applied by the caliper to the brake pad and by heat caused by friction. Copper coats and smooths the rotor. The smoother the rotor, the less chance of brake noise caused by vibrations. Vibration is caused by friction surfaces sliding irregularly.
